Dad was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to New Zealand after the Second World War. New Zealand was crying out for young people who were prepared to make a new life in our far away country. Thinking about it all those years ago, it must have been a grand adventure to have said goodbye to your family and friends on a sea voyage lasting months, knowing that you may never see your loved ones again.
Thankfully everything worked out and it was in New Zealand where he met my mother who had also emigrated with her family from Denmark. New Zealand has been good to people of my fathers generation. They settled down, had families and the rest is history I guess. Dad was a real gentleman, was never one to speak his mind or ill of others. If I could take anything from his life, it would be to retain his hard working ethic and be more generous and accepting of others and slower to anger. I will always feel blessed to have known such a wonderful and caring man and I pray that he rests in peace. May God bless his soul.
